Freight Claims Specialist

Location: Chattanooga, TN | In Office

Start Date: ASAP

Position Summary
The Claims Specialist plays a critical role in protecting KCH Transportation’s financial and service integrity by managing and resolving freight-related claims and exceptions, including but not limited to Overages, Shortages, and Damages (OS&D). This position is responsible for investigating freight exceptions, gathering documentation, and facilitating resolutions that balance customer satisfaction, carrier accountability, and company interests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, file, and manage cargo and property damage claims ranging from minor to complex.

  • Collect and analyze required documentation (bills of lading, delivery receipts, inspection reports, photos, invoices, etc.) to support claim resolution.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for customers regarding claim status, providing timely updates and professional communication.

  • Partner with carriers, independent adjusters, attorneys, and insurance representatives to ensure thorough investigations and equitable outcomes.

  • Evaluate claims for subrogation opportunities and escalate when appropriate to maximize recoveries.

  • Communicate and negotiate with insurance companies, agents, and customers to facilitate resolution.

  • Collaborate with the Accounting Department to ensure accurate accruals, timely claim payments, and proper recordkeeping.

  • Maintain detailed claim files and contribute to reporting and analytics for continuous improvement of OS&D processes.

  • Support cross-departmental efforts to reduce claim frequency through process improvement and proactive issue identification.

Job requirements

  • Excellent customer service skills 

  • Proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) 

  • Basic knowledge of the DOT/FMCSA rules and regulations 

  • Ability to identify and solve problems, perform under pressure, and meet deadlines 

  • Work with little or no supervision, and work well in a team setting 

  • Excellent communication, time management, and strong attention to detail 

  • Ability to assist in the development, documentation, and implementation of efficient procedures and best practices
